The hike from the Königsee to the Obersee with lunch at the Fishunkelalm

The boat rides along the Königsee has two stops along the way.  One is at Saint Bartholomew Church and the other is at Salet. We chose to take the ride all the way to Salet first and then hike to the Obersee with a stop at the church on the return trip.

I really cannot describe to you the beauty of this area and the pictures cannot fully do it justice.

The locals grazing the late summer grass and flowers.  I always think the signage along the hiking trails is humorous.  Loosely translated my favorites say basically, “Don’t let your dogs poop here”.  “We eat the grass, you eat the cheese”.  Hiking humor.

There are two huts along the route and they give so much character to the hike.  The famous picture of Ava Braun making sport was taken on the Königsee and I have been wanting to photograph this area since I was a child.

My husband took this stunner.  The first hints of fall.

The reflection and the ripples, the lake and the trees make for such dramatic photographs.

Now we get a glimpse of the second hut.

A very helpful Deutschman helped me to find the best spot for this photo.  Hikers in Germany, Italy and Austria are so friendly and I love the varieties of the greetings along the trails based on where you are.  You here Grüs Gott, Servus and Hallo all along the trails.

You can see the Fischunkelalm in the distance and reason we made this trip.  This hike would have been very easy and flat except for the one are that is pretty much straight up and straight down but it has a rope line along the way to help and that was essential for us on the day of our visit because it rained the night before and the rocks were slippery but it is a hike that is for everyone.  We saw very young children to elderly people with hiking poles make the trek for the lunch spot.

And this is why we came here.  The Fischunkelalm is very rustic.  The menu is very small and it is cash only.  There were two people working the entire place.  One takes the orders and pours the beer and one in the back.  There is basically a cheese bread with local cheeses and spec bread which is local as well.  There is also fresh milk, schnapps and juices.  When the food and drinks are gone they are gone.

Beware, the shredded bit is not cheese.  It is fresh, homemade horseradish.
