The Italian Place ~ Middle of Nowhere heaven
After a couple of months of vacationing in Europe, we were looking for something remote. A small place with privacy. No airport, no train stations, no one around…..
We found this place in a town we had never heard of. It didn’t show up on Google maps so we met the local caretaker at the village below the house. This small village is home to around 200 persons.
We did have to learn how to use the wood fired hot tub and sauna but there was plenty of wood there and it heated everything to the perfect temperature. I haven’t seen that many stars in a very long time.
In the village below you could hear the locals mowing their grass during the day and enjoy a beautiful lake view and the hourly gong of the church bell in the distance.
In the late afternoon the paragliders would leave the mountains and float down to the lake below.
At the local co-op we met the two guys who run the small grocery every day. There is local produce, eggs, meats and cheeses as well as some local wool goods and a small selection of necessities.
For our pasta, the butcher recommended a locally sourced meat with pancetta, beef and spec ground together rather than traditional hamburger meat. It was an excellent choice.
On our last day there the internet was down so one of the guys walked with us across the street to the post office to use an ATM to get Euros so I could buy a pair of locally made wood slippers.
I loved the ceiling beams above our bed.
We ate every meal outdoors for four days. It was perfect with the lake below and the clouds settling around the mountains in the evening.
The local co-op goods were delicious. The house was also equipped with local honey and jellies for purchase. We got a voucher for a free surprise at the local co-op. It was a bottle of local apple juice that was delicious.
The Parmiggiano Reggiano at the co-op was one of the best cheeses I have ever eaten. I grated it over roasted potatoes and fainted at the table.
Ken would forage for flowers on the hills around our place while I prepared the table and dinner. One of the most relaxing trips of my life.
In the evenings we enjoyed the wood fired sauna and hot tub. We got the last light of the sunset and the moonlight.
Hot tub, sauna. Repeat and repeat and repeat with in between cool offs under the stars.
If I could choose a place to live for eternity…..
